Explaining a word in an item

Background

As an author, you can provide inline explanations for words or phrases in your item instruction for participants to better understand the question.

The participants will see a dotted underlining when a word or phrase contains an explanation. When clicking the underlined text, they will see the explanation in a pop-up.

Note: There is no template setting for showing word explanations. If word explanations have been added to an item, they are always shown in the player.

Inserting a word explanation

To insert a word explanation in an item, proceed as follows:

  1. Go To Authoring > Items.

  2. Navigate to the folder in which the item of your choice is located, Searching in the item bank

  3. Click on the item of your choice.
    ​Result: The item content pane is opened.

  4. Click in the instruction block of your item, select the word or phrase to which you want to add an explanation, and click Explain word.

    Notes:

    • You can only add explanations for text, not for images or videos.

    • Word explanations can only be added in instruction blocks, not in answer blocks.

    • There is no support for hyperlinks and word explanations on the same words. It is the author's responsibility not to combine both.

    Result: You see a pop-up in which you can explain the word.

  5. Enter the explanation and optionally an example.

    Note: The example is optional. When it remains empty, the example field is not shown to the participants.

  6. Click Save.
    ​Result: You return to the instruction block. A dotted underlining is added to the word or phrase to which you have added the explanation.

Editing an explanation

To edit an explanation in an item, proceed as follows:

  1. Open the item of your choice. For more info, see Searching in the item bank.
    ​Result: The item content pane is opened. Words or phrases that have an explanation are underlined with a dotted line.

  2. Click on the dotted underlined word or phrase for which you want to edit the explanation.
    ​Result: You see a tooltip with an Edit and a Remove explanation button.

  3. Click on the Edit button.

  4. Enter your changes and click Save.

Deleting an explanation

To delete an explanation, proceed as follows:

  1. Open the item of your choice. For more info, see Searching in the item bank.
    ​Result: The item content pane is opened. Words or phrases that have an explanation are underlined with a dotted line.

  2. Click on the dotted underlined word or phrase for which you want to remove the explanation.
    ​Result: You see a tooltip with an Edit and a Remove explanation button.

  3. Click on the Remove explanation button.
    ​Result: You return to the instruction block. The explanation is removed.

    Note: There is no confirmation message when you remove an explanation.
