About grading via grading plans

How the new grading experience with grading plans and grader tasks works.

What is grading via grading plans?

With grading plans, you organise the grading of manually scored items at scale. Instead of grading per assignment, a lead grader bundles the work for a grading round in a grading plan and divides it over a team of graders. Every grader then works through their own grader task in a dedicated grading environment.

Note: This experience replaces grading via assignments. It needs to be enabled for your environment. Want to switch to the new grading experience? Contact us via our helpdesk. A session is always graded in one place only: either via a grading plan or via the legacy Grading module.

Roles

  • Lead grader: creates grading plans, allocates graders, follows up the progress and completes the plan. Requires the permission Access to Grading plans. With the extended permission Access to all grading plans, a user sees all grading plans in the environment.

  • Grader: grades the answers in their grader tasks. Requires the permission Access to Grader tasks.

Both are available as predefined roles when you add a role via the user management menu > Roles.

The grading flow

  1. Create a grading plan: the lead grader chooses which sessions to grade. Either the plan takes in all sessions of the selected exams that finish in a Finish window, or the lead grader picks the sessions one by one in a Fixed collection.

  2. Allocate graders: the lead grader decides who grades which items, or assigns the whole plan to themselves.

  3. Publish: every grader receives one grader task with the answers assigned to them. Answers of sessions that are still in progress are added to the tasks as soon as those sessions finish.

  4. Grade: graders score the answers item by item. Fill gaps and math entry items are graded per gap, for all participants at once.

  5. Finish the task: once all answers are confirmed, the grader finishes the task.

  6. Complete the plan: when all grader tasks are finished, the lead grader completes the plan and the results become available. With Autocomplete grading plan switched on, the plan completes automatically.

Good to know

  • Blind grading: graders never see the name of the participant, and the answers are shown in a random order. Exception: users who may download recordings get a file name that contains the participant's name (see Grading your grader tasks).

  • Session grading status: in the session details in the Results module, the Grading status shows Gradable, Grading in progress or Grading completed.

  • Supported item types: Upload file, Fill gaps in text, Fill gaps on background, Revise text, Journal, Open question, Math entry, Recording, Interpreting and Canvas. Oral items and adaptive assignments are not supported.

  • Grading plans via the API: grading plans can also be created via the assessmentQ API. These plans are created by Webservice User and are only visible to users with the permission Access to all grading plans.
