Can I export questions with their answer options to Excel or PDF?

What the existing exports contain, and the XLIFF workaround for exporting full question content.

Not directly. assessmentQ has no export that lists every question with its answer options in an Excel or PDF file. You can get the full content of your questions through an XLIFF export, and convert that file into a table yourself, for example with an AI assistant.

What the exports contain

Go to Authoring > Items and click the three dots next to a folder. Under Export you find:

  • Excel: an overview of the folders and items. It doesn't contain the full content of the questions.

  • XLIFF: the texts of the questions and their answer options, in a structured format (XML) meant for translation.

  • assessmentQ package: the items in .aqp format, to import them into another assessmentQ channel.

The Excel export in Item analysis contains statistics per item, not the questions themselves.

Workaround: convert the XLIFF file with an AI assistant

Because an XLIFF file is structured text, AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot or Claude can turn it into a readable table. This works well for getting an overview of your questions and answer options, or for reviewing them with colleagues.

  1. Go to Authoring > Items, click the three dots next to the folder and select Export > XLIFF.

  2. Choose the source and target language and click OK.
Result: you can download the file from the notification center when the export is ready.

  3. Open your AI assistant, add the XLIFF file and describe the table you want. For example: "Convert this XLIFF file into an Excel table with one row per question, and columns for the item name, the question and each answer option."

  4. Tip: add a small example of the table you want. The result will match your format better.

  5. Check the result against assessmentQ before you use it.

Note:

  • Images and other media aren't included in the XLIFF file.

  • Depending on the item type, the file doesn't always show which answer is correct. Check the scoring in assessmentQ.

  • Exam questions are often confidential. Check your organisation's policy before you upload them to an AI tool.
