Managing math editor templates

Updated this week

About math editor templates

As an administrator, you can create reusable math editor templates in which you define which math buttons are available for participants in the math editor of Math entry and Math entry with CAS items.

In a math editor template you define:

  • The item type it applies to (Math entry or Math entry with CAS).

  • Which buttons are enabled for participants.

  • Whether tooltips are shown and whether the buttons are grouped by category.

When creating math items, authors can use these predefined templates instead of manually selecting individual math buttons for each item. This makes the configuration of the math editor in math items faster and more consistent across different items.

Notes:

  • Authors can override the math editor template settings, but only for their math items. These changes have no impact on the predefined math editor templates.

  • If you want to allow your authors to modify the math editor templates themselves, see Getting access to math editor templates below.

Creating a Math editor template

Proceed as follows to create a new Math editor template:

  1. Go to Settings > Templates > Math editor templates.
Result: You see the list of the Math editor templates.

  2. Click on at the top right corner.

  3. At the top of the page, enter the name of your template.

  4. In the properties pane at the right, choose whether you create a math editor template for the item type Math entry or Math entry with CAS.
Note that Math entry with CAS has a restricted number of buttons.

  5. Configure the math editor options to your needs:

    • Select which buttons should be available in the math editor.

    • Define whether you want the tooltips to be shown and / or the buttons to be grouped in categories.

Result: The math editor layout preview at the top shows how the math editor will look for participants based on your selection. Your math editor template is saved automatically and is ready to be used by the authors.

Note: It is important to select the correct item type for each template you create. Authors creating an Math entry or a Math entry with CAS will only see the templates that are available for the corresponding item type.

Editing a math editor template

Proceed as follows to edit a Math editor template:

  1. Go to Settings > Templates > Math editor templates.
Result: You see the list of the Math editor templates.

  2. Click on the template you want to edit.

  3. Change the math editor template options to your needs.
Result: The changes are saved automatically.

Note: If this template is already used in a math item, the changes are not automatically applied to these items. Authors will see a warning in their item indicating that an update to the math editor is available. The changes will only take effect after editing the item and updating the math editor template to the latest version.

Deleting a math editor template

Proceed as follows to delete a Math editor template:

  1. Go to Settings > Templates > Math editor templates.
Result: You see the list of the Math editor templates.

  2. Click on the three dots next to the template of your choice. Alternatively, open the template and click the three dots in the upper-right corner.

  3. Select Delete.
Result: The template will be removed from the list as long as it is not being used in an item. If it is used, a warning will appear indicating that all items using this template will fall back to a custom template. The custom template will contain the same buttons that were enabled by the template.

Getting access to math editor templates

To create, edit, and delete math editor templates, you need the permission Access to Math editor templates.

  • By default, only the Administrator role has this permission enabled.

  • Authors can select and use existing math editor templates in items, but they cannot create, edit, or delete a math editor template.

  • If you want to allow your authors to modify the math editor templates themselves, you must enable permission Access to math editor templates in the author role.

For more information, see About roles and permissions.
